This week-long journey in Hijikata Tatsumi’s hometown of Akita focused on learning the practice and theory of his notational butoh through an intensive three-day workshop with Kayo Mikami. The program began with a sightseeing bus tour of the surrounding area, including visits to the samurai houses of Kakunodate and a local hot spring. Later in the week, participants gathered for a screening of Admiring La Argentina, performed by Kazuo Ohno and choreographed by Hijikata, followed by a Q&A and a special one-off workshop with Minoru Hideshima, one of Ohno’s disciples. The week concluded with the Kamaitachi Cultural Festival, bringing together butoh performances, local music and dance, a free-jazz concert, and optional performances by workshop participants.
