BUTOH SCORES 2017

Akita, September 17–25

The week-long event began with a tour of Mount Haguro led by a mountain monk, followed by a visit to the self-mummified Buddhist monks of Yamagata Prefecture. This opening was followed by three days of intensive workshops with butoh artists Yuri Nagaoka and Seisaku, and a final one-day workshop with Ima Tenko. The program then continued with a two-day festival of butoh and other performances at the Kamaitachi Museum, organised by the Kamaitachi Museum and the Hijikata Tatsumi Archive. The festival included performance opportunities for participants, performances by Ima Tenko, Shoichi Fukushi, Shigeya Mori, Masahide Omori and Min Tanaka (TBC), appearances by local dancers including Bangaku Kagura and Nishimonai Bon Odori, and music by the Japanese jazz group Shibusa Shirazu Orchestra. Symposium events were also held for those interested in further discussion and research.
