We are excited to be teaming up with Laboratorio Escénico Danza Teatro Ritual, Archivo Butoh México, Museo Universitario del Chopo, Un Teatro, and Coordinación Nacional de Danza, Yale University (Council on East Asian Studies, and The Edward J. and Dorothy Clarke Kempf Memorial Fund), this fall to bring you a unique opportunity to journey back nearly half a century into the world of Tatsumi Hijikata’s butoh choreography.

Through a series of workshops, performances, archival screenings, and talks, we will open up the world of Hijikata’s creation in the 1970s, learning original phrases from his historic works and viewing recordings that have rarely or never been screened outside Japan! We look forward to welcoming you in Mexico City from November 9–23, 2025.

To bring you these events, we will be joined by butoh artists Saga Kobayashi, Moe Yamamoto and Kei Shirasaka, longtime archivist and producer of Hijikata’s works, Takashi Morishita, and current archivist Kae Ishimoto; French choreographer Nach; Mexican company Laboratorio Escénico Danza Teatro Ritual, director Eugenia Vargas; and Rosa van Hensbergen, Amanda Reid, and Ameera Nimjee from Yale University.

All workshop events are free, (except the Kanazawa Butoh-kan Masterclass, Nov. 9–11 and Saga Kobayashi Masterclass, Nov 23), but workshop participation is limited and subject to application!
